Cogeco Cable launches TiVo DVRs with Netflix app built in

(Canadian Press DataFile Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) BURLINGTON, Ont. - Cogeco Cable will soon begin renting out TiVo digital video recorders, which have the built-in ability to stream Netflix, the Montreal-based company said Thursday.

Parent company Cogeco (TSX:CGO) had previously announced that it would offer TiVos to its customers after a failed IPTV project.

Starting Nov. 3, Ontario customers who subscribe to television and Internet plans can pay $20 per month for a TiVo box, which works with one TV. There's a $7 per month fee for each additional TV to connect to the TiVo service.

One novel feature of the DVR is the ability to search for content across live TV, recorded shows, on-demand channels and Netflix simultaneously.

An iOS app allows users to watch live TV within their home on an iPhone or iPad. Recorded shows can be downloaded to a mobile device for viewing on the go.

An app for Google Android devices is planned for next year.

Cogeco Cable says it is the second largest cable TV provider in Ontario and Quebec based on basic cable customers.
