Infibeam to power net with new .OOO domain [DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India)]

(DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) "Ahmedabad: It is becoming increasingly difficult to register desired domain name ending with .com (dotcom) or .net (dotnet) but city-based infibeam has a solution. Soon, infibeam will open registration ending with .000 (dot triple O). This is the first-ever General Top Level Domain (gTLD) launched by a private Indian company, based out of Gujarat.

The registration - known as sunrise opportunity - for trademark holders was opened in September and general registration for the new domain will be launched soon, company sources said. "As per the compliance, we will not be able to share the specifics but all major global companies have bought .ooo," founder and CEO of infibeam Vishal Mehta said.

The price of the domain registration has not yet been decided as the company is completing formalities with regulator, ICANN, resellers (like GoDaddy, tucows, enom and others) and online payment gateways. The ICANN stands for non-profit organisation and is acronym Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It is a non-profit organisation responsible for the coordination of maintenance of unique identifiers related to the namespaces of the Internet.

"We have signed agreement with more than 10 global ICANN accredited registrars, who will offer .ooo through their retail platform to millions of customers worldwide. Infibeam will wholesale .ooo to registrar partners and the retail prices will be further determined by them. But it will be affordable and also will offer opportunity to book domain names which is not available on .com," Mehta said.

As per official figures, there are 271 million domain names registered totally, of which 120 million are registered ending with .com followed by 23 million .net. At this moment, for any company or individual in this country, the probability of getting domain name of their choice is very minimal.

Vishal Mehta Amdavad-based Vishal Mehta, is the founder, CEO of Infibeam.com. He completed his degree on operations research and management from Cornell University. After graduating with honours, Mehta joined Dell to gain some real world industry experience and then pursued management studies at MIT, in United States. He worked at Amazon online retail for several years in technology, finance and corporate development roles. After over a decade in the United States, he ventured out and moved back to India in 2007 and incorporated Infibeam.

How it works? A website had two internet addresses, one of them is number called IP address and the other is URL - combined together it is known as domain. A system called domain name service matches up the two (IP and URL) when an internet user types a website address.
