Acer to meet carbon emission target ahead of its plan [Forexpros]

(Forexpros Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Taiwanese computer maker Acer Inc. will hit its target of meeting more than 30 percent of its electricity needs from renewable sources a year ahead of schedule after it joined a clean energy initiative in the United States.

Acer has elected to join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership program and has purchased enough green power to offset all carbon emissions generated by power use at its U.S. facilities, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

The purchase of more than 27 million kilowatt-hours of green power in the form of renewable energy, including wind power and biomass power, will reduce carbon emissions from Acer's U.S. facilities through the end of 2015.

Because of that addition of renewable energy use by its U.S. operations, Acer estimated that the ratio of its green power usage worldwide will exceed 30 percent by the end of 2014, about a year ahead of its planned target.

The company said it had originally set goals of reducing global emissions by 30 percent by 2015 and 60 percent by 2020 from 2009 levels.

Acer has steadily reduced its energy consumption since 2009 through investments in more energy efficient air conditioning and lighting equipment, among other efforts, in our offices around the world, said Acer Corporate President and CEO Jason Chen.

The latest initiative by our U.S. operations to use 100 percent green energy demonstrates our commitment as a corporate citizen to work with our stakeholders to build a sustainable corporation and environment, Chen said in the statement.

Following the new renewable energy purchase, Acer is now listed in the Top 30 Tech and Telecom ranking in the U.S., which represents the biggest green power users among technology and telecommunications partners in the Green Power Partnership.
