WIPRO INVESTS BIG MONEY IN OPEN SOURCE PRACTICE

(Indian Business Insight Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Wipro is investing heavily in setting up a separate business practice for open source and plans to have at least a 10,000 strong team. The move is driven largely by changes in the technological space. Besides some of Wipro's largest clients, including Citigroup, are running largely on non-proprietary software. Wipro estimates that by embracing this now universal practice of open source, it will be able to implement projects faster and bring down its own operating costs by up to 20 percent over the coming two years. The company's open source practice has been made under its Business Application Services division, under which it intends to build open source platforms that enable online services on a large scale. Wipro's push into open source is also an attempt by the company to catch up with its rivals like Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys.
