White House Computer System Breached By Hackers

(Sky News (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Hackers suspected to be working for the Russian government have breached part of the White House computer network, according to reports.

The building's unclassified network was compromised during the attack two to three weeks ago, the Washington Post has reported.

An investigation involving the FBI, Secret Service and National Security Agency is now under way.

Several cyber-espionage campaigns by Russian hackers who are believed to be acting on behalf of their government have recently been reported by security firms.

Targets have included NATO, the Ukrainian government and US defence contractors.

Quoting unnamed officials, the Post said that to date there is no evidence that the classified network within the building has been affected.

A White House official was quoted as saying: "On a regular basis, there are bad actors out there who are attempting to achieve intrusions into our system.

"This is a constant battle for the government and our sensitive government computer systems, so it's always a concern for us that individuals are trying to compromise systems and get access to our networks." Some staff members were asked to change their passwords, and internal network access was shut off temporarily as a result of the breach.

A Russian attack on military computer systems in 2008 caused significant damage and took months to repair.
