Bright House upping Internet speeds for free [Orlando Sentinel]

(Orlando Sentinel (FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 28--Bright House Networks will increase broadband Internet speeds for customers -- without raising rates -- starting in December.

The cable provider will give a bandwidth boost to customers in each category and also plans to start offering a high-end 300 megabit per second tier of service in early 2015.

"With today's families and households, streaming is becoming more important, especially when you consider services such as Amazon's and Hulu," Bright House spokesman Donald Forbes said on Monday.

Forbes said the company has already handled the infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the higher speeds.

Bright House is the major cable-line provider for consumers in the Orlando and Tampa markets, also offering services such as home security and telephone.

Streaming content providers have been busily adding high-definition video, and some services, such as Netflix, are already gearing for next generation "4K" video, which would require even more bandwidth.

At Bright House, customers with a 10 megabit connection will see speeds increase to 15 megabits; 30 megabit speeds will go up to 35 megabits; and 60 megabits will go to 75 megabits per second. Top-tier customers at 90 megabits will see speeds upped to 150 megabits per second.

Prices on the 300 megabit services have not been determined, Forbes said.

The company has about 2.5 million customers nationwide, but does not disclose the number of customers it has in Central Florida.

Bright House last increased Internet tier speeds in January 2013. Those increases came with a price increase of about $5 a month.
