Ghaziabad gets underpass at GT Road as Diwali gift [Noida] [Times of India]

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) GHAZIABAD: The residents of Ghaziabad city got a valuable Diwali gift in the form of an infrastructural convenience. The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) threw open a new underpass, constructed across the GT Road, for public use on Wednesday. The underpass, which was built at a cost of around Rs 6.5 crore, is among those projects whose foundation stones were laid by UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav during his visit to Ghaziabad on June 3, 2013. Construction work for the underpass, located between the Meerut Road T-point and the Hindon Bridge on GT Road, took nearly one year to be constructed. GDA vice-chairman Santosh Yadav inaugurated the project on Wednesday. The underpass is expected to reduce traffic jams on GT Road. Vehicles from NH-24 and NH-58, travelling towards Delhi using the NH-58 bypass (also known as Raj Nagar Extension Road) also converge at GT Road. From here they travel left towards Ghaziabad on GT Road and take a U-turn some distance ahead to turn towards Delhi. Vehicular jams were constantly being witnessed near the U-turn on GT Road because of convergence of traffic. Besides, numerous accidents have been reported from this particular point on GT Road in the past. "The underpass project had been conceived keeping in mind the traffic problems witnessed at this point. Vehicles coming from Raj Nagar Extension Road can use the underpass to cross over to the side of Sai Upvan now," said a senior GDA official. Construction work for the project had been handed over by GDA to a Delhi-based private contractor. The underpass has been designed for light vehicles only, wherein it can be used by cars, jeeps and so on. The underpass, which is 46m in length, 5m in width and 3m in height, has been designed using the box-push technology.
