Enhance Penn's Woods Initiative Results in Water Line Replacement project at Greenwood Furnace State Park

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 23 -- The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources issued the following news release: Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Ellen Ferretti today announced that the department will replace more than 4,000 feet of water distribution line at Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntingdon County.

This project is part of Enhance Penn's Woods - a two-year, more than $200-million effort launched by Governor Tom Corbett to repair and improve Pennsylvania's state parks and forests.

"Greenwood Furnace is a picturesque park that offers a wide variety of educational and recreational experiences for visitors," Ferretti said. "Although this is not a flashy project, it is a critical fix to failing infrastructure and will positively improve the experience that our visitors have, while also conserving valuable water resources." The infrastructure upgrade replaces a fifty-year-old cast iron water main that had deteriorated and required large amounts of staff time and money to find and repair frequent leaks on a regular basis.

"DCNR staff work tirelessly each day to protect our public lands and ensure our visitors have a meaningful and enjoyable experience," Ferretti said. "We thank Governor Corbett for giving us the tools to be better stewards of the parks and forests entrusted to us." The state is investing $200,000 to upgrade the water distribution system at Greenwood Furnace State Park.

This project will replace more than 4,000 feet of 4-inch main water line, providing new equipment to modernize the water sanitation system, and connects a nearby Bureau of Forestry building to the park sewage system.

The water and sewer lines will be installed using modern directional drilling technology to limit surface disturbance and nearly eliminate the need to cut trees and excavate large areas, which would be required using traditional trenching techniques.

Camping, fishing picnicking, and the park's unique historical programming are all popular activities at Greenwood Furnace State Park. Visitors also launch into epic hikes or mountain bike rides through the gateway the park provides into the surrounding Rothrock State Forest.
