MIT Enterprise Forum of NYC - Who are you Online?

NEW YORK --(Business Wire)--

The MIT (News - Alert) Enterprise Forum (MITEF) of New York City announces an exciting event on the future challenges and opportunities of 'Online Identity' with Judith Donath, founder of the MIT Media Lab's Sociable Media Group and a Harvard Berkman Faculty Fellow, moderated by Michael Schrage, an MIT Sloan School Center for Digital Business research fellow. The event will be held at 5:30pm on November 11th at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz, 488 Madison Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

The ongoing explosion of new online identities raises provocative social, ethical and regulatory concerns. Should you use your real name in an online discussion? What does the history of posts and photos you have amassed on Facebook (News - Alert) and elsewhere say about you? Identity online can be slippery, with easy to change names and unverified claims; yet it can also be exceedingly persistent, your name linked to every word you've written, every person you've encountered.

Judith Donath, who has conducted pioneering research on this theme and published a new book addressing its challenges, will trace the history of online identity, showing how various technologies have affected privacy, security and sociability. This understanding is important today, as more of our everyday life is conducted online, and is essential for assessing how innovations such as face recognition will transform our social interactions.

"Judith Donath is a social media pioneer who has been working on Social Media since the 1990s when she started the MIT Media Lab's Sociable Media Group", said MIT Enterprise Forum Board Member, Cristina Dolan, "Michael Schrage, is also an acclaimed author and Visiting Fellow, Imperial College Department of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and will offer and exciting exchange of ideas. Everyone from marketing professionals to investors and entrepreneurs with an interest in the growing social media industry should not miss this timely networking and discussion opportunity."

Michael Schrage, the author of 'The Innovator's Hypothesis' - just published by MIT Press - whose work focuses on the economics of innovation in digital contexts, will moderate the discussion

Event registration is open on the website of the MITEF of NYC at: http://www.mitef-nyc.org.
