ESET bolsters flagship products [ITWeb]

(ITWeb Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Security solutions vendor ESET has unveiled the latest versions of its flagship security software products, ESET NOD32 Antivirus n8 and ESET Smart Security 8.

ESET Southern Africa CEO, Carey van Vlaanderen, says the new editions offer enhanced security and include extra features, including Botnet Protection and Enhanced Exploit Blocker, which protect against exploits and offer anti-phishing and social media scanning capabilities.

The premium product, ESET Smart Security 8, also includes additional features such as Anti-theft, Parental Control and Personal Firewall.

Citing Cisco's Annual Security Report 2014, Van Vlaanderen says Java exploits accounted for 91% of all indicators of compromise in November 2013. This was followed by Adobe Reader with a 3% share, Microsoft Excel with 3%, Microsoft Word with 2% and Microsoft PowerPoint with 1%.

He says indicators of compromise reveal any anomalous behaviour in a particular piece of data or software. The manifestation of this behaviour is the attempt to exploit the software's vulnerabilities or bugs, ultimately to gain control of the user's system.

"Both updated products protect computer users against these exploits with an added feature, the Enhanced Exploit Blocker," he says.

He adds that ESET added the Botnet Protection feature, as the 2014 Verizon Data Breach Investigation Report revealed that botnet activity was the largest single category of crimeware reported, accounting for 86%.

"2013 saw a number of high-profile botnet attacks. The technology inside ESET Smart Security 8 uncovers unusual network communication patterns characteristic of botnets. An example was Operation Windigo, carried out by ESET Research Labs. It uncovered over 25 000 infected servers, used for over two years to redirect half a million Web visitors to malicious content on a daily basis. In all, the botnet allowed the attackers to send more than 35 million spam messages per day." (c) 2014 ITWeb Limited. All rights reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (Syndigate.info).
