What happened to him and where is he now? -- Harry, Sacramento Bennett Louis Kovac was convicted in 2009 of the June 11, 2006, shooting death of 45-year-old Gary R. Brooks. Kovac was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison and his co-defendant, Wayne Albert Caskey, received a sentence of 50 years to life. Caskey was convicted in 2008 of shooting Brooks to death in Brooks' father's south Sacramento electronics business. According to stories in The Sacramento Bee, Kovac was convicted in a retrial after a previous jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. He was convicted on an aiding and abetting theory. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that Kovac drove Caskey to the shop where Brooks was killed. Prosecutors said the murder resulted from an argument that had occurred between Brooks and Caskey. Kovac, 51, is at the California Healthcare Facility in Stockton, and Caskey, 52, is at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi.
