BT confirms plan to take on 500 full-time engineers [Grimsby Telegraph (UK)]

(Grimsby Telegraph (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) COMMUNICATIONS giant BT has announced it will recruit 500 new staff to help install and repair its copper and fibre network.

The aim of the staffing drive is to reduce complaints over slow or faulty broadband connections. BT Openreach, which manages access to the company's network for internet providers such as TalkTalk, Sky and BT's own retail branch, wants to improve the time it takes to repair faults in its phone and broadband networks across the UK.

It is also spearheading the project to introduce faster broadband to rural areas under the government's Pounds 1.7 billion project that aims to provide fast internet services to 95 per cent of the UK.

A spokesman for BT said the majority of the 500 full-time engineering jobs would be permanent posts.

However, the firm would not confirm how many would be replacing workers leaving the group.

BT has already hired 1,600 engineers for the division this year. Openreach said it had received 26,000 applications for the posts.
