BT boosts engineer workforce in region [Herald, The (Plymouth, England)]

(Herald, The (Plymouth, England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) COMMUNICATIONS giant BT has employed more engineers in the South West - including in Plymouth. The expansion now takes the number of jobs created in the region since the spring to more than 220.

The firm has now employed 26 further engineers for its Openreach business in Plymouth, Exeter, Barnstaple, Bournemouth, Poole, Bristol, Swindon, Taunton, Yeovil and Truro. This latest phase of recruitment builds on Openreach's recent campaign to hire 1,600 engineers across the UK, including 200 in the region. Openreach received 26,000 UK applications - almost 16 per role - for the originally advertised posts.

Sajid Javid, Tory Culture Secretary, said: "BT's creation of 500 full-time engineering jobs is tremendous news. "Government is taking superfast broadband to 95 per cent of the UK by 2017, and it's vital a skilled workforce is in place to cope with the resulting increase in demand." Jon Reynolds, BT South West regional director, said: "For the second time in less than six months we are able to announce a boost to our engineering workforce. "We are one of the largest investors in the South West, both as a major employer and a provider of essential communications. "The economic prospects for the South West are continuing to improve and superfast fibre broadband, which we are rolling our across the region, will play a vital role in its future success."
