Jet Propulsion Laboratory Streamlines Cloud Management for Europa Mission Study with Scalr(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2014 Scalr, providers of the leading open-source enterprise cloud management platform, today announced the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has contracted with Scalr for its Cloud Management Platform (CMP). As a federally funded research and development center and NASA field center, JPL works across many long-term, phase-based projects with highly variable infrastructure and application needs during each distinct phase. JPL will use Scalr for AWS public cloud and OpenStack-based Nebula One private cloud. Scalr's approach to hybrid cloud infrastructure allows the organization to push up the stack to the platform level, subjugating infrastructure concerns. For JPL's proposed Europa Clipper Mission, a mission that will survey Jupiter's moon of the same name, multiple hardware refreshes will need to occur over the mission's duration, a term of approximately fifteen years. During this time, a high degree of elasticity is required for a number of multi-tier applications with varying operation system requirements. In addition, the organization must meet rigorous government compliance standards and manage the juxtaposition of highly popular consumer facing websites against large volumes of sensitive data. To provide this elastic infrastructure, JPL will be able to create an abstraction layer on top of OpenStack-based Nebula One and AWS to act as a platform for application deployment and provide the ability to control who has access to which applications and data, and where they are deployed. Complex Compliance Made Easy Because JPL is a federally funded laboratory, it is subject to the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) and must comply with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards as well as International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). For JPL to use any cloud technology, it must comply with the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP), a government-wide program that provides a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services.
