Risks unlimited: 'Internet is not always secure' [Daily Tribune (Bahrain)]

(Daily Tribune (Bahrain) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Director General of Information Systems of Central Informatics Organisation, Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa yesterday urged the public exercise caution while browsing or socialising online as social media websites like Facebook and Twitter do utilise data from the users' account in order to tailor the advertising.

Speaking to DT News on the sidelines of the first edition of the Annual Cyber Security Summit held yesterday, he said, "Today's  summit focused on how social media websites use data from all your activities online to target you with the advertisements that are most appealing to you." Meanwhile, he added that the marketing strategy, which apparently does break any law, is different from cyber criminals who monitor social media users' activities to obtain information in-order to steal money or valuable data.

Commenting on the possible security threat faced by Bahrain residents, he added, "Security threats are international, they do not have any countries or borders. When a hacker comes in, he looks for vulnerabilities. If it is worthwhile for them, they will take advantage of it. Every thing out there has a value, the higher the value of the information, the greater the chance of hacking," he said.

Meanwhile, he urged publics to divulge least information as possible while dealing with internet. 170 delegates from various IT fields attended the two-day function. Co-CEO of Impervio Technologies, Bernie Rice delivered keynote address. Roshcomm CEO M. A. Sridhar, who was present at the event, said that the event was well received by the information security community.
