United Kingdom : Robinson and McGuinness launch £1.1million Fujitsu Supercomputing service [TendersInfo (India)]


(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) First Minister the Rt. Hon Peter D Robinson MLA and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MLA have launched Fujitsu s new £1.1million High Performance Computing service.

In the first project of its kind in Northern Ireland, Fujitsu has invested £1.1million in a new High Performance Computing service to support the development of the local knowledge economy, particularly small and medium sized enterprises.



Speaking at the launch, the First Minister Peter Robinson said: I welcome that Fujitsu has chosen Northern Ireland to invest over £1million to deliver this innovative new service to enable our indigenous businesses to benefit from leading-edge computing technology.

The key challenge set out in our Economic Strategy is to support the rebalancing and rebuilding of the Northern Ireland economy. Our small and medium sized enterprises are one of the biggest components of our economy and any initiative that can add a significant competitive advantage to local business is very much welcomed.


Fujitsu contributes over £20million in salaries into the local economy each year and its decision to invest in Northern Ireland is proof of the company s confidence in our highly skilled workforce and our ability to deliver high quality services.

The deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said: This £1.1 million investment in the new High Performance Computing Service will contribute significantly to the knowledge economy in the north of Ireland.

Fujitsu employs over 1,000 people at sites in Belfast, Antrim and Timber Quay in Derry Fujitsu offering quality jobs in the very dynamic IT sector. Today s announcement is not just good for Fujitsu it is good news for our small and medium sized enterprises. Through the new HPC service tasks that previously would have taken months or weeks can now be completed in days or hours. This will deliver faster turnaround times, increase efficiency and most importantly help reduce costs.

Businesses are the backbone of our economy and we need to ensure the issues businesses face are addressed and the Executive continues to do everything we can to make sure we can all look forward to a prosperous future with confidence.

The High Performance Computing capability has the capacity to handle and analyse massive amounts of data at high speed which has the potential to add significant competitive advantage to a wide range of local businesses and researchers who could benefit from the application of high performance computing to their work.
