ActivEd garners $200,000 from SC Launch investment [EMBIN (Emerging Markets Business Information News]

(EMBIN (Emerging Markets Business Information News) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Greenville-based education firm ActivEd received $200,000 in investment funding through SCRA Technology Ventures' SC Launch program, the agency announced Monday.

Founded by Furman University professor of health sciences Julian Reed, ActivEd is an educational software company aimed at giving teachers interactive lessons that incorporate movement into learning for pre-K through second-grade students.

The company joined the SC Launch program with four others in June, and received mentoring and support services as a client company. The investment adds ActivEd to the SC Launch portfolio. ActivEd cites 15 years of research examining the connection between movement and academic achievement, cognitive ability and health.

“Research has been shown that kids who are more active are not only healthier, but they learn better,†Reed told GSA Business in February. Reed consults with school districts and educational organizations across the country and began developing movement-related lessons and workshops over a decade ago.

Kids who are active are 20% more likely than sedentary peers to earn an A in math or English, according to the company's website.

Reed also registered ActivEd with the S.C. Secretary of State's office last year to qualify the company to take advantage of the S.C Small Business Access to Capital Act. The act aims to incentivize investments in small businesses by giving investors a 35% tax credit on their investments.
