Global CyberLympics Champions Announced at ISACA's EuroCACS/ISRM Conference in Barcelona

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., Oct. 14 -- The Information Systems Audit and Control Association issued the following news release: Cybersecurity professionals from across the globe came together to compete in the World Finals of the Global CyberLympics held on 29 September 2014 at ISACA's EuroCACS/Information Security and Risk Management Conference in Barcelona, Spain.

Cybersecurity issues ranging from the global skills shortage to increasingly sophisticated threats were discussed at ISACA's conference, which was an appropriate setting for ISACA's Cybersecurity Nexus (CSX) to host the Global CyberLympicsWorld Finals.

The 2014 Global CyberLympics is an international online cybersecurity competition that tests the skills of information security and assurance professionals in teams of four to six people with challenges related to ethical hacking, computer network defense and computer forensics. Global CyberLympics is run by EC-Council Foundation, a nonprofit ethical hacking organization established in 2011.

The winning team that captured the most flags in the CyberLympics competition was the Cyber Padawans, from the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) in Maryland, USA. Members of the team are John Arneson, Ben Heise, Chris Kuehl, Matt Matchen, Christopher McBee and Rob Murphy.

"This competition proved to me the importance of never giving up," said Matchen, Cyber Padawans team captain. "Many times, there were road blocks thrown up that we had to work around, sometimes in seemingly fruitless situations. Regardless of how imposing an obstacle or challenge first appears, it should be met head on and without hesitation." Along with achieving the prestige of having demonstrated critical cybersecurity skills and adaptability, the team was recognized with a US $1,000 cash prize, a CyberLympics World Champion trophy and CyberLympics World Champion medals.

The second place team was Hack.ERS, from The Netherlands. Members of the team are Werner Alsemgeest, Thijs Bosschert, Gijs Hollestelle, Arris Huijgen, Hugo Ideler and Ivo Noppen. They were recognized with a US $750 cash prize and a CyberLympics medal for each team member.

The third place team was Sector C, from The Netherlands. Members are Omer Coskun, Frank Cozijinsen, Mark de Groot, Jelle Kroon, Bouke Van Laethem and Sander Spierenburg. They were recognized with a US $500 cash prize for the team and CyberLympics medals.

The other finalists represented Peru, Brazil, India, Indonesia and Australia. Overall, more than 110 teams from 40 countries participated in the global competition.

"We congratulate the top teams in the CyberLympics competition on their excellent work and sharp security skills," said Robert Stroud, CGEIT, CRISC, international president of ISACA. "There is a critical need for cybersecurity talent, and these individuals demonstrate the skills and knowledge that companies are seeking to protect themselves in an always-evolving threat landscape."
