BRIEF: Mentor Graphics wins $36 million in patent infringement suit against rival Synopsys [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore.]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 13--Mentor Graphics Corp. won a $36 million jury verdict in U.S. District Court on Friday, winning damages and royalties in a long-running dispute with rival Synopsys.

Mentor is Oregon's largest pure tech company, with about 1,000 employees at its Wilsonville headquarters. The company had revenues of nearly $1.2 billion last year.

Both Mentor and Synopsys make electronic design automation software, tools that engineers use to design semiconductors and other sophisticated electronics.

Each company had alleged the other had violated various patents. Synopsys said four of Mentor's patents were dismissed from the case before trial, and that the one that remained related to emulation technology, which EDA companies use to predict the performance of products in real-world environments.

Synopsys said it plans to appeal the jury's verdict.
