Airtel taps Ericsson for 4G deal [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Economic Times writes that Swedish vendor Ericsson has signed a 4G network deal with India's largest mobile provider by subscribers, Bharti Airtel. No details of the agreement were revealed, although an unnamed source familiar with the matter told the news outlet that the deal includes a one-year pact covering the provision of pre-pay solutions. According to TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database, 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services are still in their infancy in India, despite Bharti Airtel activating its first 4G network in in April 2012. More recently, Aircel launched its own 4G offering in August this year, and Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) – armed with pan-India 4G spectrum in the 2300MHz band – is poised to enter the market in the coming months.
