Bryant Announces Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SMITHFIELD, R.I., Oct. 8 -- Bryant University issued the following news release: Bryant University, a leading private university consistently ranked among the top schools in the country, has announced a new graduate certificate program in business analytics. The certificate will be offered through Bryant's Graduate School of Business starting in January 2015, and the graduate-level analytics courses will be integrated into Bryant's Master of Business Administration Program as a new specialization in business analytics. The new offerings reinforce Bryant's growing strength in analytics, often referred to as "big data." Analytics, which allow organizations to collect and process massive amounts of data in order to extract usable knowledge, is a rapidly expanding field creating new career options driven by advances in technology systems. Fields from finance to manufacturing are eager for the knowledge that exists in their enormous databases, but they do not have the highly skilled professionals that are necessary.

Bryant's Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics (GCBA) is a four-course part-time program developed to provide understanding in key areas of applied analytics including: big data, data analytics methods and tools, data warehousing, data mining techniques, predictive analytics, and visualization. Bryant's program is supported by SAS, a leading analytics and business intelligence software company. Students completing the GCBA will be awarded a joint certificate in data analytics from Bryant and SAS.

This new graduate program extends Bryant's strategic offerings in the applied analytics arena. In 2013, Bryant opened the Advanced Applied Analytics Center (AAAC), and the university offers an undergraduate concentration in applied analytics that can be tied to any major - one of the few applied analytics programs in the country to be offered at the undergraduate level.

"For more than 150 years, Bryant's innovative curriculum has been highly attuned to emerging needs of industry and society," said Bryant's interim provost Richard Joseph, M. Litt., J.D.

"Business analytics adds crucial value to the work that companies do, creating data-driven processes for evaluating options and predicting outcomes." Significant support from SAS has accelerated the University's distinctive applied analytics curriculum and the work of Bryant's AAAC, which serves as a hub for the development of interdisciplinary analytics academic programs, research, training, application development, consulting services and conferences, focused on real-world problem-solving.

"Analytics is an essential 21 st -century skill for business," said Dean of Bryant's College of Business V.K. Unni, D.B.A.

"Bryant's Graduate School of Business is already highly regarded for its focus on giving students skills to address real-world challenges, and our expert analytics faculty have developed exceptionally strong programs in the foundational competencies of analytics," he said.

SAS helps customers at more than 70,000 sites improve performance and deliver value by making better decisions faster. Among those, more than 3,000 educational institutions worldwide use SAS for teaching, research and administration.

"Bryant University has integrated SAS Analytics into coursework for years," said Jerry Oglesby, Senior Director of SAS' Global Academic and Global Certification programs. "The University's analytics programs are producing the talent employers need to fill a persistent analytics skills gap. Students with SAS skills have tremendous opportunities for lucrative careers." Professor of Computer Information Systems Richard Glass, Ph. D., and Professor of Mathematics and Computer Information Systems Alan Olinsky, Ph. D., are the AAAC's founding co-directors.

Dr. Glass currently serves as a member of the advisory board for Teradata University Network. He has served as a past Editor in Chief of the Journal of Information Systems Education and Editor of Empirical Research for Informing Sciences. He has authored numerous publications and has more than 20 years of consulting experience in the areas of decision support systems, data mining, and predictive analytics. His clients include municipal, state, and federal governments as well as Fortune 1000 companies and for profit and nonprofit organizations in a broad group of industries.

Dr. Olinsky's research interests include statistics, management science, and data mining. He has published articles on these topics in professional journals including the Journal of American Academy of Business, Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, European Journal of Operational Research, Interfaces, and Advances in Business and Management Forecasting. He is past president of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Statistical Association and a member of the Northeast Decision Sciences Institute.

Bryant University's business programs have been accredited by AACSB-International since 1994. Bryant regularly receives top rankings from U.S. News and World Report, Bloomberg Businessweek, and Money magazine, among others.
