Fortune Data Centers, with big Hillsboro facility, merges with Texas-based Infomart [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore.]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 07--Fortune Data Centers, which operates a big data center in Hillsboro, said Tuesday that it will merge with a Texas company called Infomart, which owns a massive data center and office building in Dallas.

The new company, Infomart Data Centers, will have data centers in California, Oregon, Texas and a new facility in Washington, D.C. It's being funded by the money management firm ASB.

Fortune's Hillsboro facility has 58,000 square feet of existing space, with capacity for an additional 40,000 square feet.

Data centers are big business in Oregon, drawing on relatively inexpensive electricity and property tax breaks that exempt the server farms from property taxes on their expensive computers. Fortune boasts that those savings, coupled with the absence of a state sales tax, make Oregon "the lowest cost state for leased data center operations in the United States." Facebook, Apple, Google and Amazon all operate large data centers in eastern or central Oregon. Fortune is one of several companies in the metro area that lease space in their Hillsboro data centers to other companies. All those facilities are in "enterprise zones," which qualify them for the property tax exemptions.

T5 Data Centers began construction of its 200,000-square-foot Hillsboro data center last month.
