NETL Partners with Local Teachers for STEM Education Successes(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 -- The U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory issued the following news release: NETL is committed to advancing new methods and technologies for efficient, low-cost, environmentally benign energy production. As part of this commitment, the laboratory works hand in hand with teachers of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to provide them with energy-related, content-rich STEM materials. Students who are excited in the STEM classroom today may pursue careers that help them find solutions to tomorrow's energy challenges. An important part of the Laboratory's efforts to prep our future scientists and engineers are three workshops for teachers of students in kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12). Held annually, these workshops offer teachers innovative ideas for hands-on classroom projects. The workshops satisfy national teaching standards while helping teachers move beyond the presentation of concepts, instead offering a means to help their students explore science. Triple E Seminar Co-sponsored by NETL and the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh, the free Triple E (Energy, Environment, and Economics) Seminar presents hands-on activities for K-8 teachers that can be transferred to the classroom to show students the relationship among energy, the environment, and economics. Participating teachers receive 10 professional education hours toward their continuing education credit requirements. A video about the seminar is available for more information. Registration is open for the 2014 seminar, to be held in November at NETL's Pittsburgh site. Topics for this year's 2-day seminar include sustainability, geology, and astronomy. Light, Color, and Spectroscopy Workshop The Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh, the Society of Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, and NETL host the Light, Color, and Spectroscopy for Kids Workshop. K-8 teachers participating in the workshop are provided with materials to use in their classrooms and special lesson plans to teach their students about the movement of molecules and atoms using the visible spectrum. The Spectroscopy Society develops content for this workshop. Teachers receive continuing education credit for attending. A video featuring the workshop is available for viewing. Computer Workshop for High School Chemistry and Physics Teachers High school chemistry and physics teachers can attend a computer-based workshop at NETL sponsored by the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh. The Society discusses data manipulation and physics laboratory simulation software, along with simulation and classroom programs with participating teachers. Teachers are provided with software, which helps them perform virtually some experiments that cannot be performed in a classroom. Teachers receive continuing education credit for attending.
