NYCEDC Welcomes 2014 World to NYC Delegation, Encouraging International Businesses to Locate and Grow in New York City(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW YORK, Oct. 1 -- The New York City Economic Development Corp. issued the following news release: New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today announced the latest delegation selected in the World to NYC Global Industry Challenge, a competitive program designed to help globally leading businesses establish operations in New York City, and local companies and community groups benefit from best practices from around the world. As part of World to NYC, NYCEDC has convened a delegation of 15 international and domestic companies in the City to hear from experts about New York City business and culture, take advantage of networking opportunities and share innovative practices from their home country or region. This round is open to companies active in the smart and sustainable cities space, which encompasses digitally-enabled technologies (including software, hardware and connected devices) that make cities more intelligent, efficient, equitable and resilient by optimizing use of energy, resources and the built environment. The delegation, which represents a diverse mix of organizations from the transportation, smart infrastructure, and energy sectors in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States, were selected from approximately 100 applicants through a competitive application process to take part in a three-day long series of panels, discussions, site visits and workshops. "Entrepreneurs from around the world know that if they want to be a true global company, they must have a presence in New York City, and programs like World to NYC allow these companies to see firsthand all that New York has to offer," said NYCEDC President Kyle Kimball. "We will learn from the innovative companies participating in World to NYC, and they will learn from us, together helping to increase our resiliency and resourcefulness, while also bringing jobs and increased opportunity to the City." The World to NYC program began on Monday and concludes on Wednesday, with speakers including Minerva Tantoco, New York City Chief Technology Officer; Michael Herrmann, Senior Advisor on Population and Economics at United Nations Population Fund; Anthony Townsend, Senior Research Scientist at NYU Rudin Center for Transportation; Luis Gomez, Vice President of International Strategy, Smart City Expo World Congress, and several others. Companies will be evaluated based on their product or service and strategy for expansion, with prizes including a plane ticket and lodging to the Smart City Expo in Barcelona for one winner, provided by the organizers of the Expo, as well as temporary office space at the Urban Future Lab, a business incubator in Brooklyn launched by NYCEDC in partnership with NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering to support startup companies, showcases innovation and provides educational and workforce training focused on sustainable infrastructure and urban resilience. The participating companies for this round include, broken up by industry track: Energy and Smart Grid * Enervalis and EV-Box (Belgium and Netherlands): This partnership has developed smart charging solutions for electric vehicles (EV). With these solutions, one can optimize the charging of a fleet of EVs, reduce capital expenditures and improve resiliency of the grid. * NorthQ (Denmark): Has developed hardware, software and cloud solutions to retrofit meter reading solutions for electricity, gas and water meters. * PowerPlug (Israel): Offers solutions that will allow office buildings managers to monitor PC power consumption in real time and manage loads by shifting power usage from the grid to other power sources (when available). * Sensing & Control Systems (Spain): Provides an end-to-end IoT service platform that enables the deployment of connected services quickly and cheaply. * ZeroBase (Michigan, USA): Specializes in rugged off-grid systems that deliver power to areas that have been affected by natural disasters and are disconnected from the grid. Intelligent Infrastructure * Bismart (Spain): Specializes in Business Intelligence solutions, including a focus on bigov Transparency (Open Data) and Better City Indicators software solutions that are developed with the City Protocol Society's guidelines in mind to create smarter, more inhabitable cities. * ForCity (France): Offers a collaborative approach inviting public authorities and project owners to model and combine their plans into a shared digital platform where urban infrastructures and geography are digitalized and interactions are modeled. * Lighting Science Group (Florida, USA): Develops innovative LED retail lighting, fixtures and custom solutions for commercial professionals and retail consumers. * OptiRTC (Massachusetts, USA): A leading cloud-based SaaS platform that uses sensor data, forecasted information, and modeling to control distributed city infrastructure in real-time * Urbiotica (Spain): Offers innovative sensor networks to transform the way in which cities are managed worldwide. Mobility and Transportation * HopOn (Israel): A mobile payment and ticketing platform for public transport making the check-in experience smoother and faster. * Metropia (Arizona, USA): An intelligent traffic management system that incentivizes commuters, businesses and governmental agencies to work together to ease congestion on city roadways. * MetroTech (Georgia, USA): Develops technologies that turn video feeds from traffic and security cameras into data that can be used to better synchronize traffic lights. * Skybus (United Kingdom and Spain): A software platform for Cities and Transit Operators to enable mass-customized, demand-responsive bus services. * [ui!] (Germany): Offers cloud-based services in the areas of transportation, traffic, energy management and sustainable facility management with an overarching focus on climate protection. An advisory group of nearly 30 leading individuals including local entrepreneurs, large and small corporations, community based organizations, academia, investors and the media helped shape the program. This group included organization like Siemens, Microsoft, Arup, City University of New York, National Grid, ConEdison, New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services, Pratt, Cornell NYC Tech, NYU Center for Urban Science and Progress, Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation, Bandwagon, Long Island City Partnership, ThinkEco, Kisi and New York Power Authority, among others. World to NYC seeks to promote trade and investment between New York City and the global economy by hosting business delegations from cities and regions around the world. The program is part of the de Blasio administration's efforts to encourage entrepreneurship and create jobs in a variety of sectors, and promote trade, investment and interaction between New York City and the global economy. The City also offers a number of programs to assist international companies, such as NYC Venture Fellows, a highly selective, year-long fellowship program designed to help the next generation of global entrepreneurs succeed in the City.
