Intel to train 1.2m women for online jobs [Business Daily (Kenya)]

(Business Daily (Kenya) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) American IT company Intel Corporation plans to train 1.2 million Kenyan women on how to use computers and the Internet to search for jobs.

The training, to be carried out in Pasha ICT centres across the country, is also designed to impart skills that will enable the women start their own businesses.

The technology firm is working in partnership with the Kenya ICT Authority, ICT ministry, USAid, Rockefeller Foundation, The Youth Banner and Safari Connect.

The ICT Authority, through Youth Banner, has so far registered 35 Pasha Centres in 27 out of the 47 counties into the programme.

In Nairobi, the Pasha Centres, Umbrella College and East African Institute of Certified Studies, will offer a specially designed self-tutoring curriculum known as Intel Learn Easy Steps intended to help learners expand their understanding and use of technology.  The programme targets to train 2,000 women by end of the year and 1.2 million more by end of the first phase in 2016. The training will cost Sh3,500 per participant.

Speaking at the launch, Danie Steyn, Intel Corporation East Africa general manager, said: "The training will equip the women with 21st Century skills to help them stay globally competitive and enable them to access borderless jobs available online." Suraj Shah, the Africa programmes director, said that the opportunities associated with women gaining access to the Internet include improvements in self-esteem and expression, expanding their social and political participation, and providing new skills that enable them to obtain formal education, become entrepreneurs, secure employment, and have access to information.

After the training selected partners will keep in touch with the women to ensure that knowledge gained is put into practice.

For instance, Rockefeller Foundation Africa regional office will connect participants who successfully complete the training with a series of online tools to help them access online training and jobs.
