Digicel pay-TV interest prompts government to block licensing process [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The office of Vanuatu's Prime Minister Joe Natuman has reportedly written to the Vanuatu Broadcasting and Television Corporation (VBTC) ordering it not to issue any new pay-TV licences pending the review of relevant legislations. According to pan-Pacific online journal Islands Business, the government is looking to set up an independent regulatory authority that can receive and review new licences, particularly for television. Islands Business notes that the decision coincides with local press reports suggesting that mobile operator Digicel Vanuatu is interested in securing a pay-TV concession.*According to TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database, Jamaica-based Digicel Group was selected to provide wireless services in Vanuatu in December 2007, going on to receive its licence in March 2008, encompassing spectrum in the 906.7MHz-914.7MHz and 951.7MHz-959.7MHz frequency bands.
