West Point Computer Science Professor to Speak at Honors Colloquium on Oct. 7(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) KINGSTON, R.I., Sept. 26 -- The University of Rhode Island issued the following news release: Col. Gregory Conti, associate professor of computer science and director of the Information Technology Operations Center at the United States Military Academy, West Point will speak at the University of Rhode Island's Honors Colloquium, Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. The free, public lecture talk is titled, "Slippery Slope of Doom: What Could Possibly Go Wrong with Our Instrumented World?" will be held in Edwards Hall Auditorium, 64 Upper College Road. He will be speaking about security vulnerabilities and privacy issues in an increasingly instrumented world. The presenting sponsor is Cox Business. Conti earned his bachelor's degree at the United States Military Academy, in 1989. He earned his master's degree in computer science from Johns Hopkins University and his doctorate at Georgia Institute of Technology. His research includes cyber security, security data visualization, online privacy, secure and usable interface design, cyber warfare and web-based information disclosure. He is the author of Googling Security, Security Data Visualization, and has been featured in IEEE Security & Privacy magazine, Communications of the ACM, and IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications magazine. He has spoken at a wide range of academic and hacker conferences, including Black Hat, DEFCON, the Workshop on Visualization for Computer Security (VizSEC), and the NATO Conference on Cyber Conflict. Conti's talk will explore this emerging new threat environment, present possible solutions, and argue that we should always look suspiciously at new technologies by understanding their true capabilities for misuse and not just what marketing literature or a friendly corporate mascot proclaims.
