Mauritius : Free WiFi Zone for enhanced use of broadband Internet at Open University of Mauritius [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A Free WiFi (Wireless Internet Fidelity) Zone was launched yesterday at the Open University of Mauritius (ex. MBC), in Curepipe, under the Intelligent Mauritius Partnership Programme (IMPP). The WiFi Zone at this site will allow the University community to harness the full potential and benefits of the Internet.

The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Mr Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum, proceeded with the launching. The Minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology, Mr Rajeshwar Jeetah, the Director General of the Open University of Mauritius, Dr Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, and the CEO of Emtel Ltd, Mr Shyam Roy, were also present. It is recalled that the OUM WiFi project has benefitted from Emtel s technical assistance.

In his address, Minister Pillay Chedumbrum said that providing a Free WiFi Zone at the Open University of Mauritius falls in line with Government s goal of making Mauritius a Smart Island. Internet connectivity, through Free WiFi Zones around the island, will be offered to the public in a bid to allow enhanced access to information and communication, he added.

Free WiFi Zones The Free WiFi Zone at the Open University of Mauritius is the third Free WiFi Zone launched over the last weeks. The first Free WiFi Zone was launched on 19 August 2014 at the site of Port Louis Victoria Bus Terminal and the second one on 17 September 2014 at L Escalier Village Hall.

Government proposes to launch 150 Free WiFi Zones across the country in the near future. As such, Free WiFi Zones will be installed on the premises of Village Halls, Youth Centres, Women Centres, Community Centres and Social Welfare Centres where computer clubs have been set up.

As at date, free WiFi Internet connectivity is available at the University of Mauritius, the University of Technology, Mauritius, and on the premises of local authorities. Some 264 computer clubs have been created.

WiFi Project It is recalled that Government had agreed in June 2011 to a project proposal for the deployment of free WiFi networks across Mauritius and Rodrigues.

The main objective is to provide free wireless broadband Internet facilities in urban and rural areas, where the demand for broadband connectivity is the most required and to provide equal access to ICT facilities for the community in the various towns and villages. The project is in line with Government s ambition of making the country an i-Mauritius (Intelligent Mauritius).
