UK Video Gaming Market Report 2014

This report estimates that, in 2013, the combined value of the video gaming software, hardware and accessories market increased by 9.8% on the previous year, and was 3.4% greater than in 2009. Growth in the market is expected to have been skewed heavily towards the end of the year in the run-up to Christmas, following the release of the new generation of games consoles: the Wii U, PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One, from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, respectively, with the latter two consoles being released in November.

Internationally, in early 2014, the People's Republic of China (PRC) suspended its ban on the sale of foreign video consoles in the country, thus providing a potentially lucrative new market for video gaming hardware and software sales, thought to be worth in excess of $13bn.


This report forecasts that, in 2014, the UK market for video gaming will continue to benefit from the release of the new generation of video games consoles, thereby recording growth of 6.5%. Further in the future, growth will begin to taper following the initial success of these consoles, as they begin to progressively reach saturation levels. Nevertheless, this report forecasts that by 2018 the UK market for video gaming will reach a value 17% higher than that seen in 2014.
