SCTE Saluting Excellence with Awards at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2014

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) DENVER, Sept. 23 -- The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers issued the following news release: The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), on the grand occasion of its flagship event, SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, once again this year is bestowing a prestigious array of awards for outstanding achievement.

At this afternoon's Annual Awards Luncheon at Expo 2014 in Denver, SCTE presented its Member of the Year Award to Bob Acheson, sales and marketing professional with San Bruno Cable TV in Sunnyvale, Calif. Acheson, an SCTE member since 1995, distinguished himself by organizing and directing SCTE Vendor Days and community outreach events, publishing monthly chapter newsletters, mentoring less-experienced professionals in the industry, and displaying selfless devotion to his profession and fellow professionals among the numerous SCTE chapters with which he is involved.

SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2014 got underway Monday and will continue through Thursday at the Colorado Convention Center.

Also at the Annual Awards Luncheon today, SCTE inducted three esteemed individuals into the SCTE Hall of Fame. The new honorees are J. Richard "Dick" Beard, director of global engineering with Ervin Cable; John T. Kurpinski Sr., vice president of Tarpon Communications Inc.; and Leslie W. Read, owner, Read Broadband Services.

Beard, who is president of the SCTE Gateway Chapter, has been a strong supporter of SCTE since the '70s and has a fine reputation for having devoted countless hours toward training cable professionals. Kurpinski has been an active SCTE stalwart, having served as At-Large Director on the SCTE Board of Directors from 1982 to 1988 and two terms as Eastern Vice President. Read, in addition to his SCTE Board of Directors and Regional Representative terms of service, owns the distinction as the first individual to achieve the Engineer-level certification in SCTE's BCT/E program.

Also presented during this afternoon's luncheon was the Women in Technology Award, sponsored by Bright House Networks and made possible through the joint efforts of SCTE, WICT, and Cablefax. This year's recipient is Sherita Ceasar, vice president, national video deployment engineering with Comcast Cable. Ceasar is responsible for the overall vision, direction, and management of all National Engineering & Technical Operations (NE&TO) video deployment projects including cross-company initiatives, infrastructure projects, technical launch management validation, and readiness for service activation.

The SCTE Chairman's Award was presented this morning at Expo's Opening General Session. This year's honoree, selected by SCTE Board of Directors Chairman Terry Cordova, is Mike LaJoie, CTO with Time Warner Cable. LaJoie preceded Cordova in the SCTE Board chairman's role. Among the numerous reasons, LaJoie was honored for having played a key role in helping to establish the SCTE Corporate Alliance Partner (CAP) program and for having played a critical role in the goals alignment of SCTE and CableLabs.

The SCTE Excellence in Standards Award is scheduled to be presented during the Expo General Session on Wednesday morning. Brian James is this year's honoree. Under his longtime chairmanship of the SCTE Interface Practices Subcommittee (IPS), extending from the mid-'90s until just recently, the subcommittee excelled in developing standards for cables, connectors, and active and passive equipment and system standards for RFoG applications. The standards James worked on ranged from the very early ANSI/SCTE 01 and 02, Specifications for the "F" Port Indoor and Outdoor to the much more recent ANSI/SCTE 174, Radio Frequency over Glass Fiber-to-the-Home Specification.

SCTE's six newest Senior Members were recognized on Monday afternoon at the Annual Membership Meeting and Reception. They are David Haigh of Charter Communications, Randy Love of Comcast Cable Communications, Steve Dyche of Suddenlink Communications, John Sweeney of SMC Networks, John T. Kurpinski Sr. of Tarpon Communications Inc., and Russell Skinner Sr. of Broadband Media Engineering.
