NACD Southern California Chapter Appoints Joan E. Herman and Rose E. McKinney-James to Its Board of Directors


(GlobeNewswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LOS ANGELES, Sept. 23, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Southern California Chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors ("NACD SoCal") today announced the expansion of its Board of Directors with the appointments of Joan E. Herman and Rose E. McKinney-James. The NACD SoCal Chapter also announced its fall programming, with exciting events featuring highly esteemed experts discussing critical issues facing directors in the evolving corporate governance landscape.

Ms. Herman has more than two decades of senior management and corporate governance experience. She is President and Chief Executive Officer of Herman & Associates, a healthcare advisory firm she founded in 2008. She is a Board member of publicly traded Convergys Corporation, HealthSouth and privately held DentalPlans.com. She previously served on the Board and chaired the audit committee of Qualicorp S.A., a publicly traded Brazilian broker and health benefits administrator, as well as on the Strategic Advisory Boards for HealthDataInsights and Bayer Medical Care.

Prior to her board service, Ms. Herman served for 10 years at the health benefits firm WellPoint, Inc. (now Anthem) as Executive Vice President, with P&L responsibility for business units including managed Medicaid, Medicare and all specialty businesses. Prior to that, she held various positions during her 16-year tenure at Phoenix Life Insurance Company, including Senior Vice President of Strategic Development and Senior Vice President of Group Insurance. Ms. Herman has an MBA from Western New England College, an MA in Mathematics from Yale University, and a BA in Mathematics from Barnard College, Columbia University.


Ms. McKinney-James has spent the majority of her 26-year career developing public policy. She is the Managing Principal of Energy Works Consulting, LLC, a firm she founded in 2003, and Managing Principal of McKinney-James & Associates, a firm she founded in 2005 to provide government and public policy consulting services to businesses. Ms. McKinney-James is a Board member of publicly traded MGM Resorts International and Toyota Financial Savings Bank, a division of Toyota Financial Services. Additionally, she is Chair of the Clean Energy Project and Board member of The Alliance to Save Energy (ASE).

Ms. McKinney-James previously was a Board member of publicly traded Employers Holdings Inc., as well as advocacy organizations VOTE Solar and the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). She served as President of Brown & Partners, President of Government Affairs for Faiss Foley Merica, and President and Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for Solar Technology and Renewable Resources. She is a registered lobbyist with the Nevada State Legislature. She was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor and was the first African-American to win a statewide primary in the state of Nevada. Ms. McKinney-James was a member of the Obama-Biden Transition Team with responsibility for the U.S. Department of Energy and the Team Lead for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Her advocacy work for small business and women in business has been recognized by the U.S. Small Business Association and the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. Ms. McKinney-James holds a JD from the Antioch School of Law and a BA from Olivet College.
