Internet Users On GSM Network Reduce to 67.1 Million


(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Thursday said that the number of Internet users on the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) networks reduced to 67,197,505 in June.

The regulatory body made this known in its Monthly Internet Subscriber Data made available to the newsmen in Lagos.

The data revealed that the GSM operators had a total of 67,459,892 Internet users in May, thereby losing 262,387 customers in June.

From the 67,197,505 Internet users recorded in June, MTN Nigeria led the table with 33,944,987 customers browsing the Internet with its network.

MTN, however, lost 865,418 Internet subscribers in June, after it recorded 34,810,405 users in the month of May.

Globacom was second on the Internet usage table, recording 14,371,392 subscribers surfing the net in the month of June.

Globacom gained a total of 691,789 additional internet users on its network, after having 13,679,603 users in May.

Airtel Nigeria took the third roll with 12,052,455 internet users in June, as against 12,108,982 customers recorded in May.

The data also showed that the company lost 56,527 Internet users on its network in June.



Etisalat is last on the table with 6,828,671 of its customers browsing the internet in June, against the 6,860,902 users in May. It lost 32,231 internet customers in June.

The Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operators ( Multi-Links and Visafone) had a total of 156,181 internet users on their networks in June, according to the data.


The Internet Data showed that the only surviving two CDMA networks in the country added 1,370 internet subscribers in June to the 154,811 users it recorded in May.

Visafone recorded 152,919 customers surfing the internet in June, compared to the 151,256 users in the month of May, adding 1,663 internet customers.

Multi-Links had 3,262 internet users in June as against 3,555 customers in May, losing 293 subscribers.

The data showed that, among the GSM networks, only Globacom was able to increase its internet customers in June.
