Talking to children about dangers of the internet ; In Brief [Hull Daily Mail (England)]

(Hull Daily Mail (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) HULL: About 30 per cent of parents in the city are now talking to their children about online dangers when they are five years old or younger, according to new research.

The survey was undertaken as part of Disney's Club Penguin's ongoing safety initiative, It Starts With You.

The results show parents are more confident discussing where babies come from or puberty and race issues than discussing how to stay safe online. Overall, 38 per cent of parents in the city said they have shied away from bringing the subject up. One in six parents are not sure what their children do online and just 30 per cent believe their children always act responsibly when on a computer. Lucy Woodward, director at Disney's Club Penguin, said: "We understand it is not always easy for parents to have conversations about online safety.

"Sometimes it is just as new to parents as it is to children.

"We want to help parents as much as possible in making internet safety rules consistent across school and home." (c) 2014 ProQuest Information and Learning Company; All Rights Reserved.
