Mesosphere Acquires Distributed Data Company OrlyAtomics, Increases Lead as First Solution to Running Docker Containers at Scale

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/17/14 -- Mesosphere, creators of software solutions for managing datacenter and cloud resources at web-scale, today announced the acquisition of OrlyAtomics, the large-scale distributed database company spun out of the social discovery leader, Tagged, which has more than 330 million global users. The addition of Orly's expertise to Mesosphere will secure Mesosphere's position as the leader in delivering a datacenter operating system at massive scale.

"As you orchestrate containers across thousands of machines and multiple geographies, which is pretty much becoming table stakes in today's environment, you need the ability to coordinate them at scale," said Patrick Reilly, CEO of OrlyAtomics. "Without coordination, containers are nearly worthless for distributed applications. At OrlyAtomics, we've solved some of the toughest data sharing and concurrency problems that make it easy to build applications that are larger than a single machine." "When you're scheduling thousands of containers across hundreds-of-thousands of machines in multiple datacenters, like Mesosphere does, you need a way to track and sync all that information," said Florian Leibert, CEO and Co-Founder at Mesosphere. "Our engineering team is very impressed with how Orly handles these data coordination issues at scale, and we saw an opportunity to tackle similar issues in the operating system we are building at Mesosphere -- not just for data coordination, but for coordinated sharing of other types of resources that are key to the primitives of an operating system." The acquisition marks another major milestone in San Francisco-based Mesosphere's roadmap as the first startup to build an operating system for distributed compute environments. Mesosphere's operating system is being built on top of Apache Mesos, the distributed systems kernel that abstracts CPU, memory, storage and other compute resources away from servers and cloud instances. Mesos powers Twitter's entire infrastructure, and in August at the MesosCon event leading technology brands like Airbnb, Ebay, OpenTable, Netflix and others spoke about powerful new abstractions the technology is enabling at their organizations.

In June, Mesosphere closed $10.5M in series A funding led by Andreessen Horowitz, with additional investors Data Collective and Fuel Capital. In August, the company launched Mesosphere for Google Cloud Platform -- bringing the power of Mesos and Google Kubernetes to the cloud, and making it easy for customers to run applications and containers at scale. Earlier this month, Mesosphere announced that leading Stanford cloud systems researcher Christos Kozyrakis had joined the team.

Mesos is open source software that pools datacenter resources and automates IT operations. Backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Data Collective, Fuel Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Mesosphere is headquartered in San Francisco with a second office in Hamburg, Germany.
