Telenor upgraded 500 base stations in year-to-date [TeleGeography CommsUpdate](TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Denmark's second largest mobile operator Telenor has upgraded over 500 base transceiver stations (BTS) since the start of 2014 to improve 3G and 4G coverage across the country, it disclosed in a press release. The improvements included 20 newly built towers; 85 existing 2G BTS have been upgraded with 3G technology and 400 existing 3G masts now also have 4G. Included in these developments, Telenor noted that it has expanded and strengthened voice and data coverage in outlying and remote areas, giving the example of a 2G/3G antenna in Hvidmosevej, Mols Mountains, deployed this month. TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database says that Norwegian-owned Telenor Denmark launched 4G LTE services in March 2013, before entering a 3G/4G network sharing/expansion programme with close rival Telia Denmark in May that year. The upgrade work for merging their respective 3G/4G networks was completed in April 2014, at which date Telenor had 3,900 3G BTS covering 99% of the Danish population, compared to 2,400 before the infrastructure sharing agreement began, while its LTE network services had become available in 192 cities/towns, equivalent to 80% of the population.
