Bidgely Selected for Prestigious Hawaiian Energy Grant

SUNNYVALE, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

Bidgely, provider of a cloud-based customer empowerment and grid intelligence platform for utilities, today announced that it has been selected to receive a $900,000 matching grant from Energy Excelerator for a project with Hawaiian utilities. One of 17 grant recipients, Bidgely has been selected for its ability to provide an engaging consumer experience and generate energy insights that drive savings, while enabling utilities and customers to track both solar and grid electricity use simultaneously. Bidgely will use the funds to provide real-time energy monitoring and personalized, appliance-level recommendations for sustained behavioral change to thousands of Hawaiian households. By taking the guesswork out of saving money on energy, consumers know, for example, that for a particular month shifting their electric dryer usage will save them more than changing their air-conditioning setpoint.

Bidgely CEO and founder Abhay Gupta said, "Hawaii is a terrific fit for our solution. With a high penetration of residential solar generation in the state, Bidgely's compatibility with solar allows utilities to expand efficiency programs to solar homes that would otherwise be left behind." Gupta added, "As a result, more Hawaiian utility customers can enjoy the benefits of targeted efficiency recommendations, while utilities can use our platform to better manage the grid."

Smart meter informationis a black box. Bidgely disaggregates this information into components that are useful to consumers - air-conditioning, refrigerator, electric dryer, hot water heater, central furnace, etc. - and then creates personalized, appliance-specific tips and recommendations. Bidgely recently announced its ability to harmonize residential solar generation with whole home and appliance level consumption, providing a complete energy view to customers and utilities that includes total electricity consumed, solar generation and consumption, and the amount of solar energy fed back to the grid. Previous research found that Bidgely enabled customers to reduce whole-home energy use by six percent.

"Hawaii has electricity prices that are quadruple the average on the U.S. mainland, and we already have a very high percentage of solar and wind that needs to be integrated more effectively," said Dawn Lippert, Director of the Energy Excelerator. "Bidgely is a leading example of how software innovation can help utilities manage the grid and help Hawaii families lower their electricity bills. We're looking forward to their positive impact on our ecosystem."

The Energy Excelerator works with startups to help solve the world's energy challenges, starting in Hawaii. For companies with strong customer traction, they invest up to $1M to develop a project in Hawaii or the Asia Pacific. The Energy Excelerator is funded by the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research, U.S. Department of Energy, and corporate partners.
