Seacom To Boost Internet Services With Fibre Optic Launch In Uganda [Ventures Africa](Ventures Africa Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) VENTURES AFRICA – Celebrations are in order for Uganda’s 6 million internet users as fibre optic company Seacom, has received an approval from the Uganda Communications Commission to operate in the country. The license allows the company to operate as a network vendor, providing connectivity services to service providers like telecom companies and other related companies. Following the approval, Seacom has set up a point of presence (PoP) at the Airtel House in Kampala where it can physically connect devices to the internet and offer potential users a feel of the user experience. At the announcement of its entry, Seacom’s Chief Commercial Officer, Byron Clatterbuck, emphasized the improved broadband quality that his firm would be bringing to the table. “Our new license allows us to own and operate our network all the way between Kampala and our international network. This will help bring more global connectivity to Uganda while improving the quality of the broadband experience for Ugandans,” he said. The services from Seacom is expected to boost Uganda’s access to global communications interconnection points and the global internet as undersea cable data transmission provides fast and low-cost internet links to the users. Minister of State for ICT, Nyombi Thembo, welcomed this development saying that such moves were necessary for the accomplishment of Uganda’s ICT-related goals such as the National Data Transmission Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) and the Electronic Government Infrastructure (EGI).
