Fast internet for rural firms [Newcastle Evening Chronicle (England)]

(Newcastle Evening Chronicle (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SMALL businesses can now access super-fast broadband from the heart of the Northumbrian countryside thanks to state-of-the-art technology.

In a bid to maximise the use of its Hexham headquarters, Northumberland National Park has created a range of work spaces in its main Eastburn building and in four bespoke units - or pods - in its grounds.

And, with the help of a secure computing network installed throughout the site, embryo companies and sole traders can now enjoy the same levels of wireless connectivity enjoyed by their inner- city counterparts.

The system has been created by Pivotal Networks, a sister company of North East cloud computing consultancy SITS Group and provides superfast internet access along with secure and reliable Wi-Fi and telephony. Managing director at Pivotal Networks, Kevin Almond, said: "While we specialise in providing this sort of system, this site threw up particular wireless challenges, not least because Eastburn is an old building with thicker walls than you might find in modern, or purpose-built office accommodation." Steve Willis, from Northumberland National Park, said, said: "Historically, a lot of rural businesses have really struggled to compete in the marketplace as they simply don't have the internet and wireless connectivity those in more urban areas have."
