IT experts for developing skill standard


(United News of Bangladesh Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dhaka, Sept 4 (UNB) - IT experts at a seminar here on Thursday stressed the importance of developing the standard of skill to create skilled manpower for the country's information and communication technology (ICT) sector.



They said Bangladesh needs to set the standard of skill for building skilled youngsters at a time when the country has put in its efforts to take forward the ICT sector in line with its 'Digital Bangladesh' vision.

"Bangladesh is absolutely on the right track for the IT enabled services like software testing services, project management, call centres, back office services, and it should create skilled youngsters standard to create employment opportunity," Indian IT expert Bikram Dasgupta told the seminar titled, `Dialogue on IT and IT Enable Services (ITES) Skill Standard for Bangladesh'.


He emphasised the need for improving the standard of skill for Bangladesh as required for the IT industry to help develop skillful youngsters like that of India for creating employment opportunities for them.

In his keynote paper, Bikram Dasgupta, who is an adviser to Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance (LICT) Project of BCC, said there should be skill development system covering national policy formulation and direction, authorised training centre network, social community, industry engagement for employability skill.

"The person who acquires the skill can do difficult things easily," he said adding that skill development today involves both Motor and Cognitive processes depending on the domain in focus manufacturing and knowledge.

"It's the skilled people who are creating jobs in India, and there's a plenty of opportunities for the Bangladeshi youngsters to do the same if they become skilled," said Bikram Dasgupta, also the founder of Infinity and the harbinger of IT Park in India.

He said there should be a third party assessment about the training and establishment of independent assessor for certifying about the standard of skill.

Secretary in-charge of the ICT Division Kamal Uddin Ahmed was the chief guest at the seminar, organised by Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) Chaired by BCC executive director SM Ashraful Islam, the seminar was addressed, among others, vice chairman of ICT Industryg Skill Council and president of Bangladesh Association of Call Centre Organisations (BACCO) Ahmadul Hoq, chief executive officer of the National Skills Development Council (NSDC) ABM Khorshed Alam.

Kamal Uddin Ahmed said the government has been relentlessly trying to take forward the ICT sector and creating skilled manpower to give it a further boost.

"The government is working to develop a digital culture for flourishing the IT industry. Skilled manpower is the number one tool to develop the digital culture as well as flourish the IT sector," Ashraful Islam said.

He said the government is putting emphasis on skill gap analysis to fulfill the gap in the sector.
