(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Peru's Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion) has begun the process of selecting operators for four fibre-optic network rollout projects. The agency has opened a tender for four projects to provide internet access to nearly 3,000 public and private institutions, as well as the general public, in four regions through the deployment of a fibre-optic backbone network. In total, the projects will serve 1,169 communities, covering 757,000 people and will require the installation of 5,201km of fibre-optic cable. The regions covered are: Apurimac (248 communities, 123,000 people and 1,409km of cable), Ayacucho (304 communities, 179,000 people and 1,898km of cable), Huancavelica (308 communities, 143,000 people and 1,327km of cable) and Lambayeque (309 communities, 302,000 people and 567km of cable). The projects were commissioned and will be financed by the Telecommunications Investment Fund (FITEL – Fondo de Inversion en Telecomunicaciones). ProInversion has scheduled prequalification of bidders to take place by the end of October with the projects to be awarded by December.
