O2 UK highlights level of data carried over 4G network in first year [TeleGeography CommsUpdate](TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) British mobile network operator O2 UK has claimed that the uptake for its 4G offerings in the first year of service is double the level of use exhibited over its 3G network in the first twelve months. In making the claim, the cellco noted that almost a fifth of all mobile data used by its customers is now accessed via its 4G infrastructure, with a total of 5,400TB of 4G data having been carried over the O2 UK LTE network since it launched in August 2013. Commenting on the company's 4G progress, Derek McManus, Telefonica UK's chief operating officer, noted: 'We have spent the past year rolling out our 4G network so we can connect customers to the products and services they are passionate about in today's digital age. It has been the fastest build of any new network in our history – just one year after launching 3G we had reached 16% of the UK population and, in the same timeframe, we already reach over 45% of the UK population with 4G.' Further the executive noted that, with the mobile operator expecting to invest GBP1.5 billion (USD2.49 billion) in its network over the next three year, it aims to achieve 98% indoor 2G/3G population coverage by 2017, as well as bringing 4G 'to even more places'.
