(Pantagraph (Bloomington, IL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 30--BLOOMINGTON -- The Labor Day weekend is traditionally a time to celebrate the end of summer, but the American Red Cross reminds people that safety shouldn't take a holiday.
Here are a few tips:
--Keep a packed first aid kit within reach. Smartphone users should download the Red Cross first aid app.
--Check brakes, tires, oil and fluids before taking a car trip.
--Tell someone about your plans for driving or boating.
--Always wear sunscreen when outdoors. Wear a hat to shield direct sunlight. Keep enough water or juice for everyone to drink continuously throughout the day and be sure to drink fluids even when you're not thirsty.
--Never swim alone, only swim in supervised areas, enter water feet first, and don't mix alcohol with swimming or boating.
--Keep the grill away from anything that could catch fire and have it a safe distance from structures. Supervise the grill when in use and make sure everyone (including pets) stays away from the grill. When planning picnics, remember to keep hot food hot and cold food cold.
