Cramped parking lots fuel brawls in Tricity [Chandigarh] [Times of India]

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CHANDIGARH: From the breezy streets of yore, the Tricity is fast metamorphosing into a place seething with the fumes of cars packed into cramped spaces. The clash between Yograj Singh, father of cricketer Yuvraj Singh, his NRI relatives and a retired DSP of the UT police, Aasanand and his two sons, over parking space at Sector 2 in Panchkula has highlighted the problem. Chandigarh has more than 10 lakh vehicles and is one of the highest ranking in view of per capita vehicles in the country. That said, the problem of lack of parking space is implied. Worst affected are southern and eastern sectors of the city. A senior official with the architecture department said, "If the northern and southern sectors of the city are compared, parking problem is evidently more cumbersome in the southern sectors. The reason is that there are more cars and less parking space." Sectors 44, 35, 36, 38, 47, 19, 20 and Modern Housing Complex in Manimajra are worst affected when it comes to parking problems. Going by police records, there have been three criminal cases, one involving relatives of an SHO of Chandigarh police who beat their neighbors at Progressive Society in Sector 50 in December, 2013. Councillor Jannat Janha Ul-Haq, who lives in Sector 35, said, "There should be a solution to parking problems in the residential areas, especially sectors 35, 36 and 47.The administration should construct multilevel parking wherever it gets space." The satellite city of Mohali has also witnessed the murder of advocate Amarpreet Singh over a parking row at Sector 3A in Mohali on February 27, 2013. Singh entered into an altercation over parking space when some PG occupants shot him at point blank range before his family members. Joginder Singh, a member of the residential welfare association of phase-V, said, "The problem will increase in the near future. At present, three cities, Panchkula, Chandigarh and Mohali share common problems." (c) 2014 Bennett, Coleman & Company Limited
