Apply now: Amazon to hire 200 more employees for Tracy warehouse [The Modesto Bee :: ]

(Modesto Bee (CA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 27--TRACY -- Amazon plans to hire more than 200 additional permanent full-time employees at its 1.2 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Tracy.

The online retailer says it needs more workers to keep up with growing customer demand. Amazon spokeswoman Ashley Robinson said the Tracy facility employs "hundreds of associates," but she declined to be more specific.

Last year, Amazon opened a giant fulfillment center in Patterson. It recently leased space in Redlands for its fifth California center, expanding its warehouse space in the state to nearly 5 million square feet.

The first California fulfillment center opened in San Bernardino in October with more than 600 positions and now has more than 1,000 jobs.

The bulk of the positions at Amazon fulfillment centers reportedly are for warehouse floor workers, called "fulfillment associates" by the company.

Robinson said Amazon wages vary depending on position and the employee's tenure with the company.

"On average, we pay 30 percent more than traditional retail jobs," Robinson said.

Unofficial reports about Amazon wages say fulfillment associate jobs start at $13.50 per hour and include benefits -- among them health care, vision, dental, a 401(k) and a stock program.

Those jobs are open to workers 18 and older, and they require at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Other basic qualifications include the ability to read and take direction in English and the fitness to lift, walk and climb. Employees must pass a background check and drug screening.

Amazon requires all prospective employees to apply at www.workatamazonfulfillment.com.

The surge in warehouse construction is part of a strategy Amazon has adopted in the past couple of years. The company is building distribution centers near major metro areas across the country to shrink delivery times.

While Tracy's staff is expanding, Patterson's staff apparently is not.

"We don't have upcoming news for Patterson," Robinson said.
