National PTA Names Sophia Waugh Secretary-Treasurer


(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 21 -- The National Parent Teacher Association issued the following news release: National PTA is pleased to announce that Sophia Waugh has been elected Secretary-Treasurer by the Board of Directors. With extensive involvement in PTA at all levels, Waugh brings to the position a wealth of knowledge, strong leadership skills, and expertise in building partnerships.



"Sophia is an exceptional advocate with an unwavering commitment to engage all families and make a difference for the education, health and welfare of every child. Her leadership, dedication and passion will be tremendous assets to the association and our members, partners and Board of Directors as we work together to support and take action for children and families across the country," said Otha Thornton, president of National PTA. "As our nation's demographics continue to shift, Sophia's election moves National PTA's Board of Directors to more closely reflect the children and families of the United States. We are proud to have her serve as Secretary-Treasurer for National PTA." Waugh has been involved in PTA for 40 years. She has held leadership positions at the local, district, state and national levels and has advocated for ways to involve the most at-risk families, including chartering non-traditional PTA units in community schools, incarcerated youth camps and with the Head Start Super Grantee. She also has been a member of National PTA's Field Service and Finance Committees. In addition to serving as Secretary-Treasurer for National PTA, Waugh continues to serve on California State PTA's board of managers as a member of the Education Commission. Outside of PTA, Waugh has been president and a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Education, the largest county board of education in the nation. She also has served on the Board of Directors for the California School Boards Association and as president of the California County Boards of Education. Currently, Waugh serves as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, which is the accrediting commission for schools in the Western Hemisphere.

As Secretary-Treasurer, Waugh serves as the financial officer and secretary of the corporation. In this position, she is a member of the National PTA Board of Directors as well as chair of the National PTA Finance Committee, chair of the association's endowment fund and vice-chair of the National Council of States. Waugh will serve a one-year term. The position is a volunteer role.


Waugh's election to Secretary-Treasurer leaves a vacancy on National PTA's Board of Directors. The Board will appoint a representative to fill the position during its meeting in November 2014.

National PTA is the conscience of the country for children issues.
