Mayo Clinic CEO will be retiring at end of the year ; William Rupp will be replaced by Gianrico Farrugia, board announces [Florida Times Union]

(Florida Times Union Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) William Rupp will retire at the end of the year and will be replaced as chief executive officer of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville by Gianrico Farrugia, the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees announced following its quarterly meeting.

Like Rupp, Farrugia will also carry the title of vice president of the Mayo Clinic.

Farrugia has been with Mayo Clinic for more than 26 years as a physician in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Division of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minn. He is also a professor of medicine and of physiology and biomedical engineering.

He currently serves as director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine and director of Mayo Clinic's Enteric Neuroscience Program. He previously served as research chairman of the Department of Medicine.

Rupp, an oncolgist, has served as chief executive officer of Mayo Clinic's Jacksonville campus since 2008. He will work with Farrugia through the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition.

"Dr. Farrugia brings a wealth of experience to his new role," John Noseworthy, Mayo Clinic's president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "He is a physician-leader who brings to this important role a deep commitment to Mayo's values, mission and strategic vision, along with a passion to lead and equip teams to reach more patients and strengthen Mayo Clinic's position as a global health-care leader. He has a strong commitment to continuing Dr. Rupp's legacy of involvement and leadership in the Jacksonville community." Rupp is currently chairman of the JAX Chamber board of directors, chaired the most recent annual Quality of Life report by the Jacksonville Community Council Inc., served as part of the Jacksonville Retirement Reform Task Force, which recommended changes in the city's pension system, and has been a member of the Jacksonville Civic Council.

Rupp plans to remain in Jacksonville after his retirement.Charlie Patton: (904) 359-4413 (c) 2014 ProQuest Information and Learning Company; All Rights Reserved.
