Cars for the canny customer ; Skoda [Newcastle Journal (England)]

(Newcastle Journal (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ONCE the butt of many a joke, Skoda has more than proved itself as a symbol of quality, performance and reliability.

In fact Skoda has managed to achieve more medal hauls than the Australian swimming team, helping it to become a popular brand among Benfield Motor Group customers.

Most recently the Skoda Octavia Estate was awarded Diesel Car Magazine's Best Estate Car for 2014, while three of its models took up the top three positions in the recent Auto Express Customer Satisfaction Awards.

The image transformation really is of Matthew McConaughey-sized proportions, with motor journalists recently salivating over sketchy artists impressions of the forthcoming Skoda Fabia; such is the unthinkable excitement that now signals the launch of a new Skoda.

The reasons behind such a turnaround are many, with well targeted marketing a key element. However, with car buyers among the canniest customers in retail, a successful marketing campaign must be backed up by a strong product.

Cars With Volkswagen firmly behind the development of the brand since its takeover of the company during the mid-90s, quality is most definitely assured, with all the hallmarks that have helped to make VW one of the most iconic marques going into every Skoda.

A key driver in Skoda's motoring renaissance has been the growing popularity of the Fabia. Based around similar specifications as a Volkswagen Polo, the Skoda Fabia is arguably the most value for money of the Volkswagen Group superminis, due in large part to the number of standard features that come with most models - even the entry level S cars are MP3 ready and are equipped with ABS and Hill Hold Control.

Given that this is a supermini, the space afforded inside is surprisingly generous and fits four adults with ease, while there's storage aplenty in the shape of 315 litre boot that beats its rivals hands down.

With the Citigo, Octavia, Superb and Yeti making similar waves in their respective classes, it's hard to deny Skoda as a market leading all-rounder.
