(Highlands Today (Sebring, FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 17--AVON PARK -- After someone burglarized an Avon Park Lakes house, a K-9 led deputies to a house where they not only arrested a suspect with some of the stolen property, but they also made an unexpected find. And they ended up receiving further help from a computer software program, according to a report released Friday.
Marvin Troy Wilcox, 20, 1919 N. Zenith Road, Avon Park, was arrested by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with third-degree grand theft, dealing in stolen property, production of marijuana and possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana.
The arrest came after a man reported on July 30 that someone stole computer equipment, including a laptop, valued at $3,000, and a tablet.
The resulting search for a suspect led deputies to 1919 N. Zenith Road, the report stated. When no one answered the front door, deputies looked over the fence in the backyard to see if someone had tried to exit that way, the report said.
They didn't see any human beings, but they spotted a marijuana plant, the report said. Later deputies searched the residence and found 11 marijuana plants, the arrest report stated.
They also found inside a vehicle parked near the residence a GPS device reported stolen in the burglary, the report said. Wilcox told deputies he bought the GPS device for $50 from a crackhead.
Meanwhile, deputies learned about a software program on the stolen computer in the burglary, the report said. A family member of the victim accessed the program on the computer remotely via the Internet and got a photo and identity of the user of the stolen computer, the report said.
Ultimately, that person identified Wilcox as the person who sold him the computer. He said he was outside his mother's house when a man later identified as Wilcox drove up in a Cadillac and offered to sell him the computer for $150.
The report indicates that authorities believe Wilcox helped others who committed the burglary sell the stolen property.
