Port Authority vetting 8 candidates for top post [Erie Times-News, Pa. :: ]

(Erie Times-News (PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 14--The Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority is considering eight candidates to replace the agency's current executive director, Ray Schreckengost, who is retiring in October.

The authority's board of directors is reviewing the candidates' résumés, and plans to whittle down the list at a meeting on Tuesday, said Owen McCormick, a Port Authority board member who chairs its Personnel Committee.

The board accepted applications through Aug. 1.

McCormick said the board will identify at least "two or three" top candidates to bring in for face-to-face interviews.

He said the board's goal is to have a new executive director selected by Sept. 1, so that person can work with Schreckengost before he leaves.

Schreckengost's $109,000-a-year employment contract expires Oct. 31.

"All the candidates are local, regional, and are all good candidates," said McCormick, who declined to identify any of the applicants. "Excellent candidates, to tell the truth." The authority's advertisement for an executive director states that the agency is looking for someone with "strong leadership capabilities" who has experience writing grants and working with state and government programs, among other qualities.

Schreckengost, 70, has served as the authority's executive director since 1994. He spent six years as a member of the Port Authority's board of directors, including a stint as board chairman, before becoming executive director. He replaced Larry Morosky, who retired.

The Port Authority, during Schreckengost's tenure, has been a catalyst for bayfront development.

The authority's projects have included the Intermodal Transportation Center and the adjacent Cruise Boat Terminal; the Bicentennial Tower; Liberty Park and the Lampe Marina campground. The authority also assisted with development of the Blasco Library and the Bayfront Convention Center.
