Intel hypes Internet of Things to government [Bangkok Post, Thailand :: ]

(Bangkok Post (Thailand) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 14--Intel Corporation, the world's largest maker of computer processors, is counting on the Thai government's information technology-based smart infrastructure investment projects to drive its revenue growth opportunities this year.

Water management, high-speed railways and smart classrooms are among the key projects to tap into, said Gregory Bryant, vice-president for sales and marketing in Asia-Pacific for Intel.

"We're committed to invest more in new advanced technologies to support the government's infrastructure development initiatives," he said.

Intel's processor-empowered "Internet of Things" system has sensor technologies that could actively monitor water levels and water management programmes. The company also has experience providing content management for smart classrooms.

Mr Bryant said the Internet of Things, a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical objects will be connected to the internet and be able to identify themselves to other devices, is a new growth opportunity. The company recorded growth of 25% in Asia-Pacific in the second quarter.

He said Intel plans to collaborate with the Federation of Thai Industries to promote the use of IT among small and middle-sized enterprises (SMEs) as the Asean Economic Community arrives in 2015. At least 100,000 SMEs in Thailand still use the internet at a low level.

Mr Bryant said Intel will triple its Asia-Pacific marketing budget this year to promote its smart internet-connected devices ranging from smartphones, tablets, phablets and the Internet of Things.

"Asia-Pacific contributed 25% of the world's GDP and demonstrates high growth potential for mobile business, thanks to young adults and their social media use," he said.

Sontiya Nujeenseng, country manager of Intel Microelectronics (Thailand), said the end of Microsoft's Windows XP support last April is likely to stimulate the personal computer replacement market. Intel's processor is used in tablets for Asus, Acer, Dell, Microsoft and Hewlett Packard, priced from 2,900-14,900 baht.
